Blog Tour de Troops – My Turn!

Welcome to my stop on the Blog Tour de Troops from the Indie Book Collective!  The stop before mine is Laurel Osterkamp‘s Blog.  The next stop (which will be live first thing tomorrow morning) is Carolyn McCray‘s.  Hang here and we’ll have some fun conversation!  If you forget how this works, my last blog post explains.  Comment on our blogs.  Get a free eBook for you and a troop.  Easy!

Before we get to the conversation, however, one of the whole objectives of this Memorial Day Weekend is to express gratitude to our men and women in the military for everything they do for us.  I feel my gratitude is best expressed as an excerpt from a Mike Birbiglia stand-up routine.

“He [George Bush] always says that if you don’t support the war, you don’t support the troops. I just think that’s a little manipulative because I love the troops. Because if they weren’t the troops, I would be the troops, and I would be the worst troops. I’d be like, ‘You expect me to carry a gun this heavy and run away screaming? That is too many things.'”

I live in Chesapeake, VA, very near many military bases and I see these men and women every day.  Often, I just thank them for what they do.  I consider myself a pacifist and am anti-war but that does not at all diminish my respect for the military and the brave soldiers who are willing to put themselves in harm’s way to protect the rest of us.  I think that was part of what Mike Birbiglia was getting at with his social commentary in that bit and I agree with him.  Especially about how bad of a troop I would be!

On a lighter note, we’re going to start a conversation now to get some free eBooks into your hands and the hands of some military folks!  I write fantasy and, much like any book, it is all about escaping into the story.  My stories happen to take place in a cartoon world but one can easily escape into any book, be it historical, paranormal, and even non-fiction.  That is the beauty of books.  One can also escape into cartoons and that is where the crux of my conversation lies.  All the while, remember, we have the freedoms of such escapism in our society only because of the troops we are trying to honor this weekend.

What is your favorite cartoon episode of all time and why?

I’ll go first! 🙂

Tiny Toon Adventures, Season 1, Episode 30: “Fields of Honey”

This episode always resonated with me.  One of the things that Tiny Toons did so well was that it explored the realm of cartoons and broke the fourth wall so frequently that it created a new wall to break . . . then broke that one.  Episodes like this one, though, explored very serious subject matter.

Babs Bunny was trying to find a female mentor but could not because all of the original classic cartoon characters were male.  In 1990, this was very representative of lots of young women, trying to locate mentors to help break them out of traditional women’s roles.  Twenty-one years later, I am amazed at how far we have come with equality amongst the genders and amazed at how much farther we still need to go.

One very key plot point in this episode is the concept that cartoons grow old and die only when they become forgotten by people.  This is actually something that is very key to the world-building I did for Toonopolis.  In the Tooniverse, cartoons exist only as they are remembered by sentient beings.  This is just one of the many examples of works that helped shape the rules of my world.

You’ll learn more by commenting below (include your email please) and earning a free copy of Toonopolis: Gemini for you and a troop!

Don’t forget to jump over to the next stop first thing on Monday morning: Carolyn McCray‘s blog.  Also, if you want to donate directly to help buy Kindles for the troops, click on the Blog Tour de Troops image to the right.

    Yep yep. Yay!

    1. Thanks for the support, Duncan! 🙂

  1. My favorite all time cartoon episode is the Purple Smurfs. It taught me how to fear, respect, and later admire the horror genre.

    1. Zombie smurfs FTW. That was a great one, Jeff! Thanks for commenting! 🙂

My favourite cartoon is Foghorn Leghorn; I really admired his tenacity.

    1. Foghorn Leghorn is a wonderful classic. As a former yankee who now lives in the south, I appreciate his wry observations and calm demeanor even more! 🙂

  2. This is such a wonderful cause and I’m so glad I can play a small part in it. Thank you so much!

Thanks so much for supporting our troops! And I am looking forward to reading your book. My favorite cartoon character is Popeye. I used to love hearing that Popeye song.

    pringpringles@yahoo.com

    1. Have you gone back and watched old Popeye cartoons as an adult in the modern era? It is amazing how politically incorrect they were (yet still so funny and entertaining). Any modern woman should want to smack Olive Oyl for propagating the helpless female stereotype.

  3. This blog tour is a great idea. Being the daughter, grand-daughter, sister, and wife to militray veterans, I would personally like to thank you and all the other authors who are participating in this blog Tour for our troops and to say a special thanks to all those men and woman who have served out country so faithfully to ensure our freedom.

My favorite cartoon is the first Mickey Mouse one. I think it was on a tugboat. Can’t remember the name. I guess that is when I fell in love with Mickey Mouse. LOL. Thank you for supporting our troops.
    katsrus@gmail.com

    1. That would be Steamboat Willie, Sue. Indeed a classic. One of the sections of Toonopolis (Grayscale Village) is based on cartoons as they were back then… with the inexplicable ‘dancing scenery’ and such. (Which was actually done that way because it was easier to animate when doing hand-drawn art than trying to draw something in the same exact spot every time).

      Thanks for your comment, Sue!

Thank you for being a part of this. Thank you to our Troops! That we are free to be doing this at all.

Honestly, I’m sure I have a favorite cartoon episode . . . you see, the last two years my cartoon time has been over taken by that a toddler. I believe they are all starting to mold together and become one. Thinking along those lines, that would make EVERY episode my favorite.

However, I do like to watch The Family Guy!

    Stephanie
    ladybug07999@yahoodotcom

    1. How old is your toddler? Just stay away from that annoying Caillou! 🙂 There are some cartoons today that are spectacularly written for once your kid(s) get a little older. Phineas and Ferb on Disney is great. Adventure Time on Cartoon Network is another.

  4. hi Jeremy! thanks for your support of the men and women in uniform stationed all over the world. thanks as well for being gracious.
i have a lot of favorite toon episodes and i can’t really choose which one’s the best. i love ’em all. c”,)

I always watched Road Runner, Scooby Do and Tom and Jerry. I didn’t care if I had already seen the cartoon a million times, they were my favorites and I would watch them over and over. My youngest inherited my love for Scooby Do and Tom and Jerry…he gives me an excuse to watch them now 🙂 Thank you for doing this for our troops. God Bless

    ams06189@yahoo.com

    1. My oldest (about to turn 6) has also inherited the love for Scooby-Doo and Tom & Jerry. He loves watching the old cartoons on the Boomerang channel. He even had a Scooby-Doo birthday cake at his birthday party last week!

Road Runner cartoons were great for their exploitation of toon physics. C-spaces, gravity effectiveness displacement, the ‘rule of cool’, and others. Thanks for the nostalgia Anita!

    1. I always loved Velma also. Geek girls are hot! 🙂

  5. Favorite cartoon of all time is prob Scooby Doo, too. I can watch the same episodes over and over and over again. 🙂 I also liked smurfs, gummy bears, and other early 80’s cartoons. 🙂

    Thanks!
    barb@barbriley.com

    1. True story: When I drink a 5-Hour Energy to help me get through a tough editing and/or writing session after finally getting my kids to bed, I picture it as a bottle of Gummy Berry Juice. I’m such a geek. 🙂

  6. I think my favorite is Scooby Doo or Tom and Jerry. A toss up! Thanks for supporting the troops!

    scrugglenamp AT aol DOT com

    1. Two very different cartoons, there. Tom & Jerry was pure slapstick. Scooby-Doo actually had a plot. Either way, both awesome and both making huge comebacks with the current generation of kids.

  7. I obviously don’t need a free copy of your book, given that I already have two copies and will be purchasing a third one through B&N so it’s in my nook library there, but I’m posting so some lucky soldier will be able to read your book and say, “I want some of what this guy was smokin’!”

i’m not sure what my favorite cartoon episode of all time is, or even what my favorite cartoon is. I haven’t really thought about it. Clerks: The Animated Series is definitely near the top of the list because it’s so quotable, but I couldn’t even pick a favorite episode of that!

    1. I was not smoking anything and I am offended by that suggestion! 🙂

Clerks was definitely great. A shame Fox aired it out of order (completely killing one of the intro jokes) and never really gave it a chance. “Who is driving?” “Bear is driving!” “How can that be?!”

First of all thanks for taking part in this tour. I appreciate our military because my dad served in Vietnam and they were not appreciated at the time. It has taken years for them to receive the respect they deserved. So this is something I can support. Giving to the military troops shows our support. Now onto something a little more fun…I love Pinky and the Brain. I use a line from that show when anyone asks me what I want to do, I say “Same thing I do everyday plan to take over the world”.
    photographsmile@gmail.com

    1. Good old Pinky & the Brain. Great spinoff of Animaniacs (I think the best side-piece, close second being Goodfeathers). My wife and I pitch that line back and forth to each other at least once a week, also! 🙂

  8. Just wanted to say that Toonopolis looks great. As an animation writer, I’m intersted in work like that. Best to you.

    1. Thanks Kevin. Hope you enjoy your free copy! 🙂

  9. Hmm favorite episode, couldn’t even pinpoint that. Fav cartoon character, I would have to say Marvin the Martian

Love that you are supporting our troops by being in this Tour.

    miranda_lynn2001 (at)live(dot)com

    1. Ah, Marvin the Martian is wonderful. What a great example of how amazingly crazy xenophobia can be! 🙂

Thank you for participating in this awesome shout out to the troops; if it wasn’t for their dedication we wouldn’t have the freedom to express diverse opinions. I have enjoyed reading your comments to each participant on your blog station. You certainly show a passion for your writing and an extensive knowledge of cartoons. Since I’m older than dirt I’d have to say my favorite cartoon would be the Popeye series and yes, let’s smack Olive, but at the time she was the “standard” for the way women behaved. Thanks for a chance to read your book.
    pam_lash at yahoo dot com

    1. I am a big fan of spinach. One of the only vegetables I eat on a regular basis. My affinity for cartoons (and Popeye amongst them) is probably to thank for that.

Thanks, Pam… I spend a lot of time, erm… researching my subject matter. At least that’s what I tell my wife it is I am doing when I’m caught watching Nickelodeon without my 6 year old around.

Does a movie count as an episode? I loved the first Shrek movie!

The blog tour de troops is a great idea.

    James R
    jamesemr(at)gmail(dot)com

    1. A movie can absolutely count! Especially one as original and funny as Shrek. I think the success of Shrek opened up a whole new world of possibilities for animators in that they could do REAL comedy and be successful. Prior to Shrek, the comedy was sprinkled in here and there instead of being a primary focal point of the movie.

  10. My mother was stationed at Norfolk Naval Base not too far from Chesapeake for a few years. I was in middle school at the time, but I still remember how much I loved the area in and around VA Beach. And people were usually very respectful of the military stationed in the area, which always made me grateful for my mother’s sake. So thank you for your support!

As for favorite cartoon: I’d probably have to go with “What’s Opera Doc?” – ’cause Bugs Bunny is my hero and that cartoon was AMAZING!

    rudd(dot)am@gmail(dot)com

    1. This area of the country is so awesome, I agree. There definitely is a high reverence towards our local military (Navy in Norfolk/Portsmouth, Coast Guard in Elizabeth City, NC). A lot of retired military end up moving back to this area as well, which is a good sign.

80% of the classical music I enjoy is based predominantly on connecting it to cartoons. That was a great Bugs cartoon. I can’t listen to Ride of the Valkyries without picturing Elmer Fudd… which is both hilarious and sad. 🙂

I’m with you, I hate war, but love the warriors – and I’d make an awful soldier. But I highly respect those who can be soldiers, fighting and defending so many. Thank you for offering them a little escapism while they do their duty.

    Siobhan
    nevadfoxATgmailDOTcom

    1. Indeed. One can even serve in war and still be a pacifist. Over the years, many Quakers have served in non-combat situations because their religion does not allow them to be active combatants in war.

  12. My favorite would have been Talespin, in particular the episodes about Thembria. As a cold-war kid, it resonated with me. Also, one of the few “banned” Disney cartoons is about a terrorist plot to kill the Thembrian premier.

    1. Talespin was definitely a great one for applying real world situations in an animated environment.

  13. I was big fan of Tiny Toons as well, but I haven’t seen it in years. Baby Plucky always made me laugh though.

    scottpoe(at)hotmail(dot)com

    1. I still will randomly shout “water go down the hole” after flushing the toilet. People in public restrooms don’t respond well to that.

  14. Thanks for participating in the blog tour, it’s such a great cause. My favorite cartoon was the Snorks, always wanted to live underwater.

    1. So glad to get a Snorks reference here! They were so much more than just Smurfs underwater! 🙂

    1. That’s okay. I’ll let you slide… 😉

  17. When you live in the Hampton Roads area, it’s almost impossible not to support the troops right? There are so many there! I lived in Norfolk and Hampton and with a brother and a host of friends and cousins stationed in Norfolk and Portsmouth, I came to appreciate EVERYTHING that they do. A visit on the Truman made me appreciate them even more. If you’ve never been on an aircraft carrier and have the opportunity to do so, DO IT! It’s truly amazing!

I’m crazy for any disney cartoon movie, my favorite is probably Song of the South. Not very PC but has great memories of watching it when I was young.
    lvs2dv@gmail.com

    1. I despise revisionism in anything. Song of the South was a great cartoon that truly represented the attitudes of the time. We shouldn’t revise/ignore/forget about it. We should learn about how far our country has come with things like racism so we can learn how to get even better at being equal.

I’m not sure about a favorite episode, but I loved so many cartoons. Growing up military, I was introduced to so many cartoons that I never understood a word of. For me, it seems strange to see Speed Racer in English. Okinawa showed it in Japanese. It is memories like this that make me wish my husband had been able to enlist. He had too many surgeries and artificial parts for their liking. Although my children are being raised civilian, they are being brought up with the same respect my husband and I have for the military.

    Katie
    redneckinn2006@gmail.com

    1. Awesome stuff Katie. Speed Racer is a great example of why (most times) subtitles are better than dubbing for most non-English animations. You’ll actually find a reference to this in Chapter Eight when Gemini visits Animetown. 🙂

Being the only girl, my vote didn’t count when it came time to pick what to watch. QQ. However, my brother was kind enough to allow me to watch The Smurfs which I loved at the time. My mother would save up and buy the little characters for me on special occasions, which might be why I always wanted to watch the program. I remember being very annoyed with there only being one female character and she was super annoying, at best. “Oh, save me! Oh, help me!” Still… it didn’t stop me from begging him to put it on.

I already have your book! Give my copy to a soldier, sailor or military spouse! <3

    1. Well, much like Babs Bunny’s issue from my original post, female role models were hard to find in old cartoons. Even today it’s finally starting to become acceptable for strong female leads. I look forward to writing my third book in the Toonopolis series, as Zephyr is anything but an ‘oh, save me!’ type of character. 🙂

    1. Can’t believe it took this long to get a Rocky and Bullwinkle references. I have referred to many a bumbling boss as “Fearless Leader”.

Hey Jeremy, even though I got my copy of the book in the mail last week, I would love to have a digital one to make it easier to carry to work, for when I reread the finished version! Thanks again for posting about this tour, and I hope it brings you lots of followers.
I love anamaniacs. I think one of the things I like most it how it spoofs so many classic movies and movies stars, as I am also a movie buff. If I have to pick one, maybe when Pinky and The Brain did the Third Man 🙂

    1. Thanks Meg! 🙂 This whole tour is definitely a “no lose” situation for everyone involved. I’m very happy to have had the opportunity to participate. This whole weekend has been stellar.

I agree that Animaniacs was great with their spoofs and parodies. I just had a review done that said the humor of Toonopolis reminded the reviewer of Animaniacs. I took that as a high compliment.

I would have to agree with you on the anti war but not anti warrior…. a point that my cousin and I have agreed to disagree on and to never talk about again. LOL

Favorite cartoon episode…. wow…. Okay… Magic Scool Bus, when Ralphie gests sick and the class goes inside him and gets attacked by the white blood cells. Cant realy say why, it just sticks with me. LOL Maybe because as an M.S. patient I identify with it, then take it a step further to attacking my nerves after the infection is gone.

    Can’t wait to read Toonolopis.

    1. Oh, man, the good old Magic School Bus. I loved both the books and the cartoons. I actually remember that episode. The science was always so well done and the humor kept it interesting. Learning can be fun! 🙂

  23. Thank you for taking part in this wonderful event 🙂

I loved watching Carebears in my younger days and thankfully my 3 year old daughter loves watching them too..hehe. I also enjoyed the old Alvin and the Chipmunks shows 🙂

    1. There’s nothing like sitting down and sharing old cartoons with your kids, right? My son has become enamored with Tom & Jerry. The Two Mouseketeers was on a few days ago, which is one of my all time favorite T&J episodes.

      “Touché, pussy-cat!”

  24. I always loved Scooby Doo, but I’m not sure which episode would be my favorite. I loved them all!

Thanks for supporting our troops. I, too, wish there never had to be war, but life isn’t always what we wish. So I’m glad we have people to protect us.

Thanks for treating our troops to a gift. I am sure they will like it. I get so mad when people talk bad about our military when they don’t agree with war. Do they not understand if was those same people that protect the right for them to even have an opinion. I’d like to send out a huge thank you to all those that keep us safe and protect our freedom both in war times and peace times because it’s hard during both.
thank you fellow brat Carol. 🙂

    1. Indeed, Carol. Our troops are doing the job they signed up for. Military does not function with dissent, which is why they must follow their orders, even if they might not agree with them.

My all-time favorite cartoon…there are too many pick from. I watch entirely too many cartoons, having 5 kids under the age of 12 of my own and babysitting others. As a kid, my favorite was Smurfs. I couldn’t stand Smurfette but I always thought she was such a lucky girl to be so desired by all those boys. Now, as a mother of 4 boys, my favorite cartoon would probably have to be Avatar: The Last Airbender. Katara is pretty but annoying, Toph is kick@$$, Zuko and Aang are sweet, but my favorite is the comedian Sokka. I find myself smacking my head like him all the time and am surprised my forehead isn’t red by now. My favorite episode is when Aang is afraid to sleep and he daydreams Appa and Momo fighting. My kids love the giant mushroom scene with Sokka.

    1. Avatar is a wonderful, wonderful show. My wife and I had “Family Avatar Night” almost every night with our five-year old as we watched through the series on DVD. My favorite episode was the one with King Bumi in Omashu. 🙂

  25. Jeremy,

I am SO dating myself, but my favorite episode is when Bugs Bunny first meets Marvin the Martian.

I have a review copy of your book, but I would appreciate it if you could send the troop copy to Private Zach Schaneberger, his email address is zach.schaneberger@gmail.com. He’s deploying in a few days and I’m sure he’ll enjoy your book.

Feel free to donate the copy you would have given to me to a second service member chosen at random, if you don’t mind.

Take care and thanks for doing this – Tracy

    1. Tracy, there is nothing wrong with that episode! 🙂 As I said before, Marvin the Martian (or, the way people respond to him) was (and still is) an awesome satire on xenophobia. I have sent the code to Pvt. Schaneberger as you requested. Thanks.

When i was a kid i used to come in from school curl up in the arm chair in front of the telly and watch Scooby doo,. It brings back warm memories of home. The great thing is my son is now doing the same thing and i often sit and watch with him. It’s abit like its gone a full circle. They have changed the theme tune on the modern episodes though which i think’s a real shame.
On the film front i don’t think you can beat The Last Unicorn, its a timeless fantasy classic.
I think this blog tour is a great idea, well done

As for my favorite cartoon episode, it has to be when the abominable snowman had buggy bunny and was telling him that he was his new best friend and he was going to call him George.

Oddly enough, that cartoon was the first thing that popped into my mind when my drill Sargent was explaining that our m-16s were now our best friends, so of course mine got named George.

    dreamsgate at clearwire dot net

    1. Definitely a great one. I’m gonna hug him, and squeeze him, and call him George. That, if you didn’t know, was a parody of George Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men. If you haven’t read that, you should. 🙂

Thanks for doing this event for our troops. I grew up a Navy Brat and actually lived on base in Chesapeake for almost 2 years before moving to Norfolk.

My favorite cartoon?? When I was little, I always loved Winnie the Pooh. And there was a cartoon on that was called Dot & the Kangaroo. I think it was actually a cartoon from Australia. But I think my all-time favorite isn’t a traditional cartoon as it is computer animated: I absolutely LOVE VeggieTales!!! I got hooked on them when I worked at a daycare. The kids loved to watch them also. Although I got so engrossed to the point that the kids would be like “Do we have to watch VeggieTales again?” LOL – They are such a fun way to teach kids about the Bible.

It’s hard to pick a favorite episode – I really love Dave & the Giant Pickle (David & Goliath); and Rack, Shack & Benny (Adrach, Meshach & Abbedniggo and the fiery furnace). I even have the theme song memorize…. “If you like to talk to tomatoes, if a squash can make you smile, if you like to waltz with potatoes, up & down the produce aisle… Have we got a show for you… VeggieTales…..” Better stop before that’s stuck in my head for 2 weeks!! LOL

Well, my favorite animated anything of all time is Who Framed Roger Rabbit as I’ve dedicated a large part of my life to living as Roger does. (Do dumb things that make everyone laugh in any situation while dating hot red heads.)

Though I have to say the runners up are:

The Tick: The Tick vs The Tick where Tick fights Barry in the Superhero bar, while Arthur gets stuck in the Sidekick lounge. The absolute funniest and most quotable Tick episode ever. Also the most awesome lines out of Sea Urchin, even counting the episode all about him.

Avatar: The Ember Island Players. This is the absolute best ‘throw away’ episode of any show live-action or animated in a series that didn’t have any other throw away shows at all. It was the funniest way to poke fun at the whole story and give you a little breather right before the climactic finale.

And another life lesson for me: The episode of Looney Tunes where Bugs Bunny replaces the Roar Runner in antagonizing Wile E. Coyote. This episode made me hate Bugs forever. He is the biggest jerk and at points is just hurting Wile E. just out of spite. This episode solidified my love of Wile E. Coyote at a young age and also reinforced the idea to never quit no matter what life throws at you even when big dumb popular jerks are raining on your parade.

Also, I’d like to thank the troops for defending this country as well as Voltron for Defending the Universe.

PS – You can donate my copy as well since I already bought four physical copies and I don’t own a kindle.

  34. First of all, this was a wonderful idea! My husband is a disabled vet and I come from a very patriotic community. It’s nice to see people still care about supporting our troops.

Secondly, I’ve put a lot of thought into my favorite cartoons and I find it impossible to pick just one. There were so many good cartoons back in the day – Droopy, Underdog, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Tennessee Tuxedo, Sherman and Mr. Peabody (gotta love the Way-Back Machine!), Loony Tunes, Garfield, Ducktales, Rescue Rangers…I could keep going, but I’m sure you get the idea. I love cartoons! 🙂

    1. The idea is that you’re just as big of a geek as me, Kaysielynn. And I love it! 😉

And I thought I made my extreme geekiness evident the other night with all that talk of man-eating ferns and whatnot…The way I figure it, anyone who quotes Star Trek on their first date (yes, that would be me) must be a pretty big geek, but I’m okay with that (also, he didn’t believe I was a fan, so I really had no choice). I am geek, hear me roar! 🙂

Man, I watched and still watch, a lot of cartoons, and I am awful at making lists, or having a top anything, but here goes… One of the first ones I can think of was the Futurama episode “the Sting”. It was almost a perfect storm of absurdity, humor, and drama. The ending always makes me tear up. It would be one of the top cartoon episodes that I would point a cartoon-skeptic towards, that it can be just as poignant as any live action television series, or movie, or book.

As much as I insist that not all cartoons are for kids, I love A:TLA for showing how amazing culture meant for kids can be. And Zuko Alone is an awesome episode, full of character development and western homages.

    1. I think the key is that Japanese cartoons are not necessarily for kids (at least before they are Americanized). Avatar, though, is an Anime-inspired cartoon done by Americans, which gives you the best of Anime but designed from the beginning to be a family cartoon. That is what makes it so great. 🙂

“Simon’s Cat” Easter animation is great. The cat chases a bunny and when he finally catches it (and thinks he’s killed it), there’s instant remorse. Reminds me of Robert Frost’s “The Rabbit Hunter.” Decisions have consequences. Thanks for participating and for the free book! rzeissler@yahoo.com

    1. And people think cartoons are just still little entertainment with no morals to be learned. 🙂

My favorite cartoon would have to be Tom and Jerry. They were entertaining, and it is so strange to think that a chase would be so different every time.

    1. I agree. It’s crazy how something so repetitive like Tom & Jerry still manages to entertain. Maybe it’s because deep down inside, we all like watching cats get hurt. Smug buggers.

  38. My daughter’s favorite cartoon is my favorite as well: Family Guy.
It is a “laugh out loud hurt your sides” kind of funny cartoon. They make fun of things really hard and do not hold back and do not care about correctness. All in the name of fun and laughter.
Thank you for your wonderful work keeping the minds of our great troops stimulated and informed through books.
